Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Use seasoned breadcrumbs for added flavor.
  • 1/4 cup milk Whole milk enhances the richness of the patties.
  • 1/4 cup diced onions Fresh onions add a sweet crunch; shallots can substitute for a milder flavor.
  • 1 egg, beaten Acts as a binder to keep the patties together.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Garlic powder gives a wonderful depth; fresh minced garlic can be used instead.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Enhances the savory profile of the dish.
  • Salt and pepper to taste; essential seasonings to enhance the flavors.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil For a healthier fat option; can also use vegetable oil.
  • 1 cup beef broth Provides a rich base for the gravy; substituting with chicken broth works too.
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour Thickens the gravy; cornstarch can serve as a gluten-free alternative.
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish; adds a pop of color and fresh flavor to the dish.

Equipment

  • large mixing bowl
  • skillet
  • whisk
  • Meat Thermometer

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, diced onions, beaten egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into an oval patty about 1 inch thick. Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to ensure even cooking.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  4. Carefully add the patties to the skillet, ensuring there is space between them. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side until they are browned and cooked to 160°F internally.
  5. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate without cleaning the pan.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth and flour until smooth.
  7. Pour the broth-flour mixture into the skillet and bring it to a simmer, whisking constantly.
  8. Cook and whisk for 3-4 minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  9. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy and simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  10. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot.
