Description
A comforting casserole that combines tender sliced potatoes with the rich flavors of French onion soup, topped with melted cheese and crispy fried onions. Perfect for family dinners or potlucks.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs starchy potatoes (Russets or Yukon Golds)
- 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese
- Fresh thyme
- Salt and pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté sliced onions until golden brown (15-20 minutes).
3. Thinly slice potatoes and combine them with heavy cream, salt, pepper, and thyme in a bowl.
4. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potatoes followed by half of the onion mixture. Repeat layers and finish with Gruyère cheese on top.
5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Notes
- Slice potatoes uniformly (about 1/8 inch thick) for even cooking
- Can substitute Gruyere with Swiss cheese
- Make ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours in advance, refrigerate, then bake
