Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk egg yolks, milk, melted butter, lemon juice, and zest until combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold into the batter.
  • Pour batter into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup sugar evenly over the top.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool before serving. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
